John Hubbard, 61, of Leilani Estates was arrested Tuesday for allegedly firing a handgun at a man also of Leilani Estates.

Hawaii County police announced today that officers arrested a 61-year-old Leilani Estates man Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree reckless endangering after he allegedly fired a handgun at a 32-year-old man also of Leilani Estates.

Police responded to a report of gunshots at 12:21 p.m. near the intersection of Kahukai and Makamae streets in the subdivision.

The younger man said he and several acquaintances were surveying the area of his former home, which was taken by lava, when the older man approached him in a pickup truck.

Police said they got into an argument, and the older man allegedly assaulted the victim and pointed a firearm at him and his group, demanding they leave the area immediately.

The 32-year-old received non-life threatening injuries from the assault, but no one was shot. Police said the suspect fired several shots.

Police arrested John Hubbard near the scene. He was taken to the Hilo cellblock and was arrested on suspicion of first-degree reckless endangering. He has not been charged.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 935-3311 or Detective Kayne Kelii at 961-2378 or Kayne.Kelii@hawaiicounty.gov.
