Rainbows find pot of gold

No, it wasn't brand-name competition. But the University of Hawaii-Manoa basketball team still left a memorable first impression in winning the Rainbow Classic and opening a season 3-0 for the first time in six years. The Rainbow Warriors were remarkably versatile -- outgunning Montana State, playing tight defense down the stretch against Cal State Fullerton and grinding out a victory over Central Michigan in an ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon game that ended after 1 in the morning.

First-year coach Gib Arnold was happiest that the team played hard, played together and played with passion.

"If we would have done those three things and gone 0-3, I still would have been pleased," he said.

Inouye makes right call

U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye has politely declined to go to bat for the chief engineer of the 204-unit condominium where Inouye resides in Bethesda, Md. He has suggested that his condo neighbors instead ask their Maryland congressional delegation to keep Marco Antonio Rua and his 17-year-old daughter from being deported to their native Peru, The Washington Post reports.

The Ruas came to America on a Spanish passport as tourists without visas in 1995, and immigration authorities have ordered them to leave. A petition in their support drew 333 signatures within 24 hours. Inouye has said he is sympathetic, but Maryland's two senators have declined to sponsor a private bill to block the deportation. Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., though, has lobbied the Department of Homeland Security to keep the Ruas in the U.S., the Post reported.
