Alfred Bloom, a professor emeritus at the University of Hawaii and an authority on Shin Buddhism, with his beloved statue of Amida Buddha in his Kailua home. He obtained the Tokugawa-era statue in 1958 in Japan. Bloom, who converted to Shin Buddhism more than four decades ago, has written extensively on the faith and on the teachings of its founder, Shinran Shonin.
